Mental WellBeing: Visit from Naella Grew

At the beginning of yet another busy term, we were pleased to welcome Naella Grew (BA; MA; Grad. Dip. Couns; MBACP) to Beau Soleil to talk about teenage development and emotional literacy.

Naella is a qualified counsellor and she is the co-author of a popular guide to parenting entitled ‘Teenagers Translated’, and an acclaimed speaker on adolescent issues, therefore it was particularly insightful to be visited by such an expert in this field.

Naella explained the various neurological and biochemical factors that can influence adolescent behaviour and then gave an enlightened assessment of possible response strategies by adults.
She also drew attention to recent research about the kind of adult interventions and environment that are most conducive to stable behaviour, growth, and learning. Naella pointed out ways for staff to adapt their emotional and communication skills, which students can subsequently absorb and emulate.

In addition to raising awareness of the latest research in adolescent psychology, Naella’s lively and entertaining presentation was warmly received by teaching staff and provided a theoretical framework and common vocabulary for subsequent pastoral initiatives at the school.
